Footprint Announces 2022 Ocean Heroes Award Winners, Recognizing Global Efforts to Eliminate Single-Use Plastics

Gilbert, AZ – Feb 18, 2022 - Footprint, a global materials science technology company focused on creating a healthy planet, today announced it has awarded five customers with an annual Ocean Hero Award, and two honorees. The awards celebrate businesses leading by example to eliminate single-use and short-term-use plastic. Award recipients were honored during an award ceremony at Footprint’s fourth annual Sustainability Summit, Champions of Change, which brings together sustainability leaders and Footprint customers to discuss the impact of plastic on human health, the environment and global carbon emissions. In addition, Footprint presented Sir Richard Branson with an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award for his tireless work to protect the world’s oceans, which he accepted at the Summit by video. Ireland-based Junk Kouture was also presented with an honorary award, for their work elevating up-cycling through creative expression and inspiration for the next generation of builders and engineers, which they accepted in person after an on-stage exhibit of their high-fashion, upcycled, student-constructed costumes.

Ocean Hero Award winners were selected based on their global commitment to eliminate plastic from their products and their work with Footprint to move toward plant-based solutions. Winners have demonstrated a proven impact and a spirit of innovation as leaders, while making a positive contribution to the environment.

“The global problem of plastic and its impacts on our health and the environment requires a total transformation of many of the products we use on a daily basis. This year’s Ocean Hero Award winners are committed to demonstrating change and have been partners with us on our journey to imagine a world without single-use plastic,” Footprint co-founder and CEO Troy Swope said.

The 2022 Ocean Hero Award winners are:

  • Albertsons: Albertsons is committed to transforming the supermarket and is proactively addressing plastic in its stores through the sourcing of fiber trays for produce and cut vegetables and fresh meat. • Costco and GloriAnn: GloriAnn corn is sold in fiber trays at more than 200 Costco stores throughout the Pacific Northwest, California, Hawaii and South Dakota, helping deliver fresh sweet corn to customers while meeting their sustainability goals.
  • HAVI and McDonald’s: McDonald’s Canadian customers at more than 1,000 stores can now enjoy their cold drink with a plant-based lid, reducing unnecessary plastic waste.
  • P&G and Gillette: For the launch of the new GilletteLabs with Exfoliating Bar, Gillette eliminated legacy plastic to create a plant-based, recyclable, dyed fiber razor tray, removing a stubborn source of plastic from its packaging.
